When the story came out, the officer said she was “overwhelmed with people thanking me.”
Jessica Robles shoplifted $300 worth of food from a Miami grocery store but when Vicki Thomas, the police officer called to the scene, learned that the woman only taken the food because her children were hungry, Thomas did not take Robles into custody.
Robles’ 12-year old daughter described the situation at their house to the officer, saying it was not “fun…to see my brother in the dirt hungry, asking for food, and we have to tell him, ‘There is nothing here.’”
Later Thomas went back into the store and purchased $100 worth of groceries for the family; she described their reaction when she delivered it: ”To see them go through the bags when we brought them in, it was like Christmas. …That $100 to me was worth it.”
CNN reports that Thomas asked one favor of Robles: that if she got back on her feet, she would help someone else out.
