(WIDK By Max McKeon) - The whale shark was captured in a fisherman’s net, and was not released for several hours.
The town of Boljoon located inside the Philippines tied up a whale shark for over two hours to allow a young girl, Carinn Lestolis, surf on top of the enslaved fish.
Fisherman Pablo Trapero captured the whale shark because he claimed it needed to be dragged ashore in order to properly rerelease the whale shark back into the water.
According to Daily Mail, a young girl identified as Carinn Lestolis was photographed in a surfing pose on top of the animal in Barangay Granada in Boljoon, Philippines.
The photograph sparked protest from many environmental groups and leaders.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources eventually arrived at the scene, and released the animal back into the water.
The mayor of Boljoon has since apologized for the fisherman’s actions, and promised tougher regulation to protect whale sharks.
