Kamran Khan, 13, suffered burns over 65% of his body when he doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire in shame for not being able to afford a new school uniform.

Khan later died of his injuries.

According to the Washington Post, Khan’s mother refused to buy him a new uniform for entering seventh grade. Upset and ashamed, Khan spent his piggy bank savings on gasoline and self immolated.

Khan’s suicide is raising awareness of just how far into poverty most Pakistani citizens are.
